graduate admissions

SFAI’s internationally regarded graduate programs provide an environment where students are encouraged to move from critical reflection to hands-on application, from dialogue and critique to revision and transformation.

Under the guidance of our exceptional and accomplished faculty, and in continuous dialogue with their peers, graduate students at SFAI are prompted to reflect on the interconnection between art theory and art practice and to consider the contemporary, conceptual, traditional, and theoretical practices of art within a global community.

The Graduate Faculty Review Committee in each area of study reviews applications, and the admissions process is highly selective.

MFA programs are offered in Design and Technology, Film, New Genres, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. MA programs are offered in History and Theory of Contemporary Art, Exhibition and Museum Studies, and Urban Studies. Students may also apply to pursue a dual MA/MFA degree option.
